There’s
a lot in the Bible about planting.
Scripture passages abound concerning planting, reaping, watering,
increase, uprooting, re-planting, awaiting the harvest, ripening, harvesting,
and the list goes on. After all, God was
the first one to plant a garden.
He
created it all simply by speaking it into being. But, being the eternal God that He is, He
knew that we would need to keep on planting in order to maintain a continual
harvest. So, He not only created the plants, He made them bear seeds.
Some
plants provide food for people, some food for animals, some help aerate the
soil, others rebuild the soil’s nutrients.
Some seeds we don’t really understand the importance of, such as those producing
weeds or poisonous plants. However, God,
in His infinite wisdom fashioned plants of all kinds with seeds that reproduce themselves
over and over again. I know He has a
purpose for them all.
Jesus
told a parable about seeds: “A farmer went out to sow
his seed. 4) As he was scattering the seed, some fell
along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5) Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil.
It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6) But when the sun came up, the plants were
scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7) Other seed fell among thorns, which grew
up and choked the plants. 8) Still other seed fell on good soil, where
it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.” Matthew
13:3b-8 NIV
As the Master
Gardener, Jesus himself knew all about soil, seeds, planting, cultivating,
roots, weeds and so forth. When He
created us in His image, He gave us the desire to be like Him. We are to cultivate His word in our hearts
and lives so that good fruit may be sown for generations to come – eternal
fruit.
